The Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA®) is an online mapping tool that integrates both static and real-time data, such as Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps, ship locations, weather, and ocean currents, in a centralized, easy-to-use format for environmental responders and natural resource decision makers. Developed by NOAA and the University of New Hampshire(link is external) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Department of the Interior.

Arctic Biodiversity Data Service

The ABDS is an online tool to house, collect, display and search for Arctic biodiversity related data, maps and graphics for decision making. The ABDS ensures that biodiversity data provided to CAFF are organized to guarantee a lasting legacy in a manner that facilitates data discovery; increased understanding; more informed and rapid decision-making; and ongoing research.

Circumpolar Oil Spill Response Viability Analysis (COSRVA)

COSRVA Map Portal to better understand the potential for different oil spill response systems to operate in the Arctic marine environment due to the increasing concern on the risk of oil spills as human activity increases in the Arctic.

This portal presents the results of a 2017 analysis commissioned for the circumpolar Arctic region, with updated data regarding ocean and environmental conditions. Site users are strongly encouraged to review the portal guide, and to review the full report for explanation of the study approach, methodology, and limitations.

The Arctic SDI Geoportal compiles Arctic data from the Arctic Council and other sources in an interactive map of the circumpolar region.

PAME

PAME’s work focuses on conservation and sustainable use of the Arctic marine environment, with an emphasis on policies for managing marine activities.

MPA Guide Marine Protection

The Marine Protection Atlas (MPAtlas), a project of Marine Conservation Institute, was launched in 2012 as a way to provide a more nuanced picture of global marine protection. MPA tracks and evaluates strong global protection, helping nations and the world reach international conservation commitments.

SDG Transformation Center Interactive Map.

The Sustainable Development Report (SDR) reviews progress made each year on the Sustainable Development Goals since their adoption by the 193 UN Member States in 2015. Displaying Ratings: Ratings provide a visual representation of a country’s performance on the SDG.

Atlantic Area

The Atlantic coastal environment faces many threats, including pollution from hazardous waste sites, accidents involving crude oil trains, and oil spills associated with marine transportation. The online mapping tool Atlantic ERMA is a key part of equipping resource managers and responders with the geographic information they need for an effective industrial waste site case, emergency response, or for future restoration activities.

DARP

NOAA Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Cases – Natural Resource Damage Assessments to assess and restore natural resources after oil spills, ship groundings, and hazardous releases.

DARP Cases

Displays the locations of oil spills, hazardous waste sites, or ship groundings where we are currently pursuing protection and restoration of natural resources. The locations of restoration efforts associated with these projects are also available.

Monitoring the Oceans for Oil Spills

In December 2008 the NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB) began to develop the capability of detecting oil slicks in order to meet the request for oil spill support from the Emergency Response Division (ERD). The SAB Marine Pollution Surveillance Program became fully operational in late 2010. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and multi-spectral satellite imagery is routinely analyzed on a 24x7x365 basis for accidental and intentional crude oil discharges within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and its approaches.

UNESCO Sites Navigator

Funded by the Flanders UNESCO Trustfund (FUT) and the Netherlands Funds in Trust (NFiT), the UNESCO Sites Navigator is the dedicated Geographic Information System (GIS) for UNESCO’s key designated sites around the globe. The UNESCO Sites Navigator offers a comprehensive monitoring tool that visualises verified, georeferenced boundaries of World Heritage properties, Biosphere Reserves, and UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Software and Datasets

Here is a quick link to many of the most commonly used tools and resources that NOAA OR&R offers for oil spill responders and planners. General emergency responders may also want to refer to the quick list of tools and resources for chemical spill response.

  •  Oil Spills and Planning data (Data.gov is the United States government’s open data website. It provides access to datasets published by agencies across the federal government). It containing 1,004 datasets.
